January Progress

It's been a good start to the year hobbywise. Well, good start in that I actually made hobby progress and am posting about it. So with the bar set that low I made it!

Behold! The beginning of a Battletech Alpha Strike army using Epic Orks.

I wanted to use the two foot platoons as a test for the army appearnce. I liked how they turned out so I'll get started on the rest.

While not as spiffy as the Orks I made some progress on the Kings of War front with my Abyssals.  I'll be doing unit basing for this army so I made a couple of different size.

A infantry horde, monster, troop, cavarly regiment, and infantry regiment. These were made using greenstuff and a roller.

All in all decent progress for the month.

2018!

So, it's been a while.....that's on me.  Thankfully I've been busy gaming and building, just not posting about it.

I did manage to keep to my idea of minimalist gaming and I was able to clear out a large number of models collecting dust. To track my progress I created a sheet that where I'd tally games played and models gained/losses.  So it was a productive year in decluttering and I hope to continue my gaming trend.

That's a lot of junk gone!

Since I'm already tracking model status, I might as well track games played.

As I'm not a monk and I would like to bring in more nerd shinies I'm going to try and stick to one of the below when purchasing a model.

Painted 10 models
Build 25 models
Lose 50 models

The idea being I've now cleared out a good bit of junk in 2017. 2018 should be the year of progress, be it building or painting.

Another goal is I want to start posting more. Hopefully having a visual tracking of progress will help me stay on track.

That's all for now.
Thanks for reading.

Minimalist Gaming

For those familiar with the minimalism concept it would seem like I would be trying to mix oil and water with minimalist gaming.  The bare bones idea of minimalism is to keep only things that bring value to your life, whether that be because you want them (books, KoW army, ect) or need them ( kitchen utensils, refrigerator, ect.). So while on paper there shouldn’t be an issue with doing both the gaming hobby has a sneaky way of getting you to accumulate stuff that doesn’t necessarily bring value, ie random bits/models for games you don’t play.

To that end, I’ve begun a purge of gaming stuff that has been sitting around collecting dust.  The idea being I’ll use the funds to get units painted for games and armies I do use.  So out goes that drawer of 40k Space Marine and Imperial Guard bits and in comes painted Hunters of the Wild units. This process will be rinsed and repeated until I hopefully have more painted armies than not and a much cleaner living space/garage.
Here's to progress!

Spoiled for Choice

2017 is shaping up to be a good gaming year.  I’ve got game systems lined up to check all the boxes so there really shouldn’t be an excuse to not be able to find a game.
Skirmish - Frostgrave
Small Scale – Konflict 47’
Large scale fantasy – Kings of War
Large scale sci-fi – Warpath

The real sticking point will be working to get armies done for all the systems.  As it stands I’ll only have forces immediately ready for Frostgrave and Kings of War. I’m in the process of building Konflict squads now and learning the rules for Warpath.  I’m excited to see how the Asterians do on the battlefield as my field tests have been using my old 40k Orks as Marauder fill ins.

One thing I’ll be doing this year is track the number of games I play and the models I acquire/lose throughout the year.  Hopefully it will give me a good idea of what I’m actually doing game wise.

Here’s to a great 2017!

End of Year Hobby Ramp Up

Thankfully a perk of my current employer is the extended shutdown we have every year.  This time around I was luckily enough to get an early start and take a few extra days off.  I hope that I'll be able to clear out some of my backlog of projects in this timeframe, so we'll see.

To that end I've been working hard to finish up my 10mm Salamanders forces.  These units and characters only required a bit of work to get them ready for battle.

Standard group shot

Shaman and Fighty heroes.

Skirmisher units

The heavy hitters

These additions will bring the Salamanders up to the 2.5k range of the 5k goal.  Most of the points will be in units as I'll only assign the magic items to the heroes to make tracking everything easier. Thanks to the recent KoW Historical book, I hope that these guys will see action soon.

On the smaller scale I added two new members to the Mousling Warband.
They will be a treasure hunter and pack mule, the treasure hunter will definitely see use shortly.

The Disney Faced Killers warband grows....

Last but not least, I was able to get more done on my 4Ground buildings. This one was a bit of a doozy being 3 stories, but it adds a good bit to the table appearance.  I did mess up one section, but with a healthy wash I think it was covered up enough to not be too noticeable unless you know what you are looking for. While pricey, they are definitely worth it.  Only 6 more buildings to go....

A very good end of year surge I think.

Marshall the Armies!

Not the quickest turn around time that I had hoped for, but still moving in the right direction.

I've been working on various bits and the showiest part is the conversion of armies over to Kings of War basing.  While not that big of a deal, it does allow me to start accurately making army lists. Up to this point for the Ratkin I was operating under the "I think I have enough too..." which is not a bad start, but not where you want to be when you are actually building the list.

With that said, here are the units I have converted to date.

The rest are waiting on me to move some models around to free up the tray.

Not the greatest of starts, but still not bad.

The next project was one I've been need to work on for a while now.  It is converting models over from Bretonnian to Brotherhood for a friend of mine.  I've been borrowing the army for a while so as a thank you I'm making it more Kings of War friendly.

With the minimum model count I was able to create a couple extra regiments. Once all the units are converted over he'll end up with about 2,000pts of Brotherhood.  It won't be the best force, but it'll will provide a good foundation for anything he'd like to add in the future.

All in all I think some good progress has been made. I hope to have some more stuff put together shortly. Now if I can only remember to take pictures of the progress....

It's back!

It truly has been a while....I've been posting on the mantic forum as of late and trying to do a log there but given the headache to use their site I'm bringing it back here.

The log on the Mantic forum did well until I ran into some issues logging in and posting.  That couple of week delay was sadly enough to knock me off my track and it's functionally dead to me now.

The goal here will be to try and get something up every other week. Enough to keep things busy, but not so much that it's to a spam level. The goal will be to keep myself motivated and also just to keep track of my progress throughout the year.  It won't be of any game system specifically so as not to lock in, but given my current interests I expect it will mostly include.
  • Frostgrave
  • Kings of War
  • 10mm Kings of War
  • Warpath
  • Board Games
  • Terrain
  • Deadzone
Here's to the rest of 2016 and hopefully 2017 working out better than my previous attempts.
